WooCommerce vs Magento 2: Which is Right for Your UK Business? (2025)

10 April 2025 • 9 min read • By Magento Services UK Team

WooCommerce and Magento 2 are two of the most popular open-source eCommerce platforms used by UK merchants. Both are powerful, both are extensible, and both power millions of stores worldwide. But they serve different types of businesses, and choosing the wrong platform can be costly.

In this comparison, we draw on our 10+ years of building and maintaining both WooCommerce and Magento 2 stores for UK merchants.

The Honest Summary

Before diving into detail: there is no universally "better" platform. The right choice depends entirely on your specific business โ€” your size, complexity, budget, and growth plans. But here's our rule of thumb:

  • Under ยฃ500k annual revenue, simpler store: WooCommerce is usually the pragmatic choice
  • Over ยฃ500k revenue, complex requirements, or B2B: Magento 2 typically delivers better returns
  • Rapid growth expected, heavy customisation needed: Magento 2

Performance Comparison

WooCommerce: Performance varies enormously based on hosting and theme. A well-optimised WooCommerce store on good hosting with a lightweight theme can be fast. However, WooCommerce stores often suffer from plugin conflicts and database performance issues at scale. Achieving 90+ Lighthouse scores requires significant work.

Magento 2 with Hyva: With Hyva Theme, Magento 2 stores consistently achieve 90โ€“100 Lighthouse scores. Built-in full-page cache (with Varnish), Redis, and Elasticsearch mean Magento 2 handles large catalogues and traffic spikes better than WooCommerce. At scale, Magento 2 significantly outperforms WooCommerce.

Winner: Magento 2 (with Hyva) at scale; roughly equal at small scale with the right setup.

Cost of Ownership

WooCommerce: Lower initial cost. WooCommerce itself is free, though you'll need hosting, a premium theme, and several plugins (typically ยฃ500โ€“ยฃ2,000/year in plugin costs). Development is generally cheaper per hour as WooCommerce developers are more plentiful.

Magento 2: Higher initial investment but better long-term scalability value. Open Source is free; Adobe Commerce has significant licensing costs. Magento 2 developers command higher rates than WooCommerce. However, for complex stores, Magento's architecture typically results in lower maintenance costs over time.

Winner: WooCommerce for initial budget; Magento 2 for long-term complex store TCO.

Scalability

WooCommerce: Struggles beyond ~50,000 products and ~10,000 orders/month without significant infrastructure investment. Many high-growth UK brands outgrow WooCommerce and migrate to Magento 2.

Magento 2: Built for scale. Some of the world's largest online stores run Magento. 500,000+ product catalogues, millions of orders, multi-store operations โ€” Magento 2 handles it all natively.

Winner: Magento 2 for scalability.

B2B Features

WooCommerce: Limited native B2B support. B2B features require third-party plugins which vary in quality and can conflict. Managing complex trade pricing and workflows is difficult.

Magento 2 (Adobe Commerce): Comprehensive native B2B feature set โ€” company accounts, shared catalogues, quote management, POs, approval workflows. Best-in-class for B2B eCommerce.

Winner: Magento 2 clearly.

Developer Ecosystem & Talent

WooCommerce: Large developer pool; thousands of WordPress/WooCommerce developers available at various price points. Easier to find affordable development resource.

Magento 2: Smaller but highly specialised developer pool. Magento 2 developers (especially certified developers) are harder to find and more expensive. However, Hyva Theme has made Magento 2 development more accessible to developers with modern JavaScript skills.

Winner: WooCommerce for talent availability; Magento 2 for specialist depth.

When to Migrate from WooCommerce to Magento 2

Many UK merchants start on WooCommerce and migrate to Magento 2 as they grow. Common triggers for migration include:

  • Store performance issues that hosting upgrades don't solve
  • Need for proper B2B features
  • Plugin conflicts causing ongoing stability issues
  • Outgrowing WooCommerce's product/order volume limits
  • Need for multi-store, multi-currency, multi-language capabilities
  • Complex ERP/CRM integration requirements

Our team handles WooCommerce-to-Magento 2 migrations regularly. We migrate all your product data, customer accounts, and order history while rebuilding your store on Magento 2 with Hyva Theme for optimal performance. See more at magento-services.com.
