Magento 2 B2B eCommerce: The Complete 2025 Guide

5 April 2025 • 11 min read • By Magento Services UK Team

Magento 2 has become one of the leading platforms for B2B eCommerce globally โ€” and for good reason. Its native B2B features (available in Adobe Commerce) combined with the flexibility to build any custom business logic make it an excellent choice for UK wholesale merchants, trade portals, and manufacturers selling direct.

Why Magento 2 for B2B?

B2B buying is fundamentally different from B2C. Where a consumer makes a single purchase decision, a B2B buyer often navigates approval workflows, negotiates pricing, places large orders from curated catalogues, and expects invoice payment terms. Most eCommerce platforms are built for B2C and bolt on B2B features as an afterthought.

Magento 2 (particularly Adobe Commerce) was purpose-built to handle both B2B and B2C โ€” and in many cases, both simultaneously from a single installation.

Core Magento 2 B2B Features

1. Company Accounts

Company accounts allow you to model real business relationships in Magento 2. A company has a company administrator who can create buyer accounts for employees, assign them roles and permissions, and control what each person can do โ€” from browsing a restricted catalogue to placing orders up to a certain value, to full account management.

This is essential for UK wholesale merchants dealing with large retail chains or national accounts with multiple buyers.

2. Shared Catalogues & Customer Group Pricing

Not all B2B customers see the same prices or products. Magento 2's shared catalogue feature lets you create different catalogues for different customer groups. A national account might have access to a premium product range at contract prices, while a smaller trade account sees a standard range at trade prices.

Combined with Magento 2's tiered pricing rules, volume discounts, and customer-group price rules, you can model virtually any B2B pricing structure.

3. Quote Negotiation

The quote request workflow is one of Magento 2's most powerful B2B features. A buyer can add items to a cart, request a quote rather than checking out directly, and a sales rep receives the quote request in the admin panel. The sales rep can adjust prices, add discounts, add notes, and send the quote back to the buyer with an expiry date.

The buyer can then accept the quote (which converts directly to an order) or counter-negotiate. This mirrors the real sales process for many UK wholesale and manufacturing businesses.

4. Purchase Orders & Approval Workflows

B2B buyers often need internal approval before placing large orders. Magento 2 supports configurable purchase order approval workflows โ€” orders above a certain value require a manager to approve them before they're processed.

PO number entry at checkout is also available โ€” buyers can enter their company's internal purchase order reference for accounting reconciliation.

5. Requisition Lists

Rather than the consumer-style "wishlist", Magento 2 B2B offers requisition lists โ€” essentially saved order templates. Buyers who reorder the same products regularly (a restaurant ordering ingredients, a retailer reordering stock) can save their common orders as requisition lists and reorder with a few clicks.

6. Company Credit

Magento 2 Adobe Commerce allows you to set a credit limit for each company account. Buyers can purchase "on account" up to their credit limit without a payment card โ€” you invoice them separately. Full credit history and outstanding balance information is available in the admin panel and the buyer's account area.

B2B + Hyva Theme: A Powerful Combination

One common concern about Hyva Theme for B2B is extension compatibility. The good news is that Hyva's B2B support has improved significantly. The core B2B features of Adobe Commerce have Hyva-compatible frontend implementations available, either officially or through the community.

The performance benefits of Hyva are arguably even more impactful in B2B than B2C. B2B buyers are often power users placing large, complex orders from large catalogues. A fast, responsive interface significantly improves their experience and reduces the chance of cart abandonment.

Is Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce Better for B2B?

The native B2B feature set (company accounts, shared catalogues, quote management, purchase orders) is only available in Adobe Commerce. However, many B2B requirements can be met with Magento Open Source plus well-chosen extensions and custom development โ€” at a much lower cost than Adobe Commerce licensing.
